DISCOVER THE MOUNTAIN

About Stuc a’ Chroin

Stuc a’ Chroin brings a noticeably rockier character to the hills above Loch Earn. Often paired with Ben Vorlich, it is a separate mountain objective whose approach can include scrambling rather than a simple walk between grassy tops. The contrast is especially useful when deciding what kind of day the group wants: a broad approach to a neighbouring top does not describe the rockier ground here. Southern approaches offer another perspective on the mountain, while the familiar northern combination puts the change in terrain at the centre of the outing.

The landscape

Steep rock distinguishes the summit from the broad slopes of its northern neighbour.

The ascent

The commonly used approach from Ben Vorlich includes scrambling. Southern approaches have a different route character.

A rocky continuation

The interest lies in the contrast between neighbouring summits, and in choosing a line suited to the group.

Explore this mountain in more detail

About the mountain

Stuc a’ Chroin brings a noticeably rockier character to the hills above Loch Earn. Stuc a’ Chroin sits in the southern Highland hills near Ben Vorlich. It deserves its own assessment, even when the two names appear together in a route title. The rocky ground is central to the experience. The rocky upper mountain provides a striking change from the broader outline of Ben Vorlich. Seen as part of the pair, its appeal comes from that contrast; approached separately from the south, it becomes the main objective rather than an extension to another summit.

What the climb is like

The commonly used approach from Ben Vorlich includes scrambling. A combined ascent from Ardvorlich requires more than reaching Ben Vorlich and continuing on impulse. Check the onward line, the descent and how the group will handle rough ground. The northern connection should be judged on its own rocky terrain, particularly where the ascent changes from walking into scrambling. A decision made before leaving the first summit is more useful than assuming that the second peak involves an equivalent continuation.

Landscape and geography

Steep rock distinguishes the summit from the broad slopes of its northern neighbour. Other published approaches come from the south, Glen Ample and Glen Artney. These change the journey; they do not make every ascent equivalent to the familiar northern scramble. Ben Vorlich and the glens to the south place the mountain within the southern Highland landscape. The different starting directions reveal different slopes, so the same summit can be the end of a direct southern outing or part of a larger northern circuit.
