DISCOVER THE MOUNTAIN

About Glas Leathad Mor

Glas Leathad Mor is the highest summit of Ben Wyvis, whose long, rounded ridge dominates the Easter Ross skyline. The approach over An Cabar leads into a notably different environment: a high plateau carpeted with moss heath, important for its plants and breeding mountain birds. The scale of the ridge and its relative isolation give the mountain its character. Following the established walking line is also a practical way to reduce trampling of the fragile vegetation that makes the upper ground special.

The landscape

A broad ridge dominates Easter Ross, with extensive moss heath covering the high plateau rather than a continuous field of summit rock.

The ascent

The established approach follows the burn before a steep climb to An Cabar and a further walk along the high ridge.

A living summit carpet

Dotterel use the summit moss heath for breeding; keeping to the established line helps protect vegetation vulnerable to repeated trampling.

Explore this mountain in more detail

About the mountain

The rounded skyline of Ben Wyvis is a familiar feature of Easter Ross and the inner Moray Firth. Its upper ground is distinctive for the extent of its moss heath, a habitat that NatureScot manages as part of the National Nature Reserve. The mountain is not simply a climb to a single pointed top: reaching An Cabar introduces a longer stretch of high ridge. That change of scale is central to the outing, with broad summit ground replacing the steeper slopes of the approach.

What the climb is like

The established route follows the Allt a’ Bhealaich Mhòir before climbing steeply towards An Cabar. From there, the walk continues along the ridge towards the highest summit. The plateau’s moss vegetation is sensitive to trampling, and NatureScot asks visitors to remain on the established line rather than spreading onto undamaged ground. A visible path and rounded skyline do not remove the demands of a high mountain walk. Refer to the existing route and forecast for planning rather than using this short account as directions.

Landscape and geography

Ben Wyvis stands apart from much of the surrounding high ground, with the Moray Firth to one side and wider Highland ranges beyond. Its plateau supports extensive moss heath, while the lower slopes include woodland, heather and bog vegetation. Dotterel and ptarmigan are associated with the high ground. The connection between the mountain’s broad shape and its fragile plant cover is an important part of its natural character.
