DISCOVER THE MOUNTAIN

About Beinn Ghlas

Beinn Ghlas is often crossed on the way to Ben Lawers, but it is a Munro with its own place in the range. It also lies within the Ben Lawers National Nature Reserve, where the mountain flora adds interest beyond summit collecting. The climb also introduces the scale of the central Lawers landscape before the higher summit is reached. Mountain plants and broad upland views give reasons to slow down, rather than treating Beinn Ghlas only as height gained on the way elsewhere. It is a complete mountain in a setting where the nearest neighbour can easily dominate attention.

The landscape

High slopes form part of the Lawers reserve and support arctic mountain plants.

The ascent

The usual Ben Lawers path crosses Beinn Ghlas before continuing to its higher neighbour.

About the mountain

Beinn Ghlas is often crossed on the way to Ben Lawers, but it is a Munro with its own place in the range. Beinn Ghlas helps define the familiar approach to Ben Lawers. Its importance is both geographical and ecological, rather than simply being the first high point on a paired outing. The mountain has an identity beyond its familiar role on the way to Ben Lawers. Its open upper slopes, upland plants and widening views provide reasons to appreciate the ascent itself, with the higher neighbour supplying context rather than the only purpose of the outing.

What the climb is like

The usual Ben Lawers path crosses Beinn Ghlas before continuing to its higher neighbour. Distinguish the usual two-summit day from a longer traverse across An Stuc, Meall Garbh and Meall Greigh. The extension changes both terrain and return arrangements. The first summit and the continuation to Ben Lawers are separate stages, even on the familiar paired route. The linking ground, additional climb and return need to remain part of the plan rather than judging the day solely by the approach to Beinn Ghlas.

Landscape and geography

High slopes form part of the Lawers reserve and support arctic mountain plants. The summit belongs to the central Lawers range. Sensitive high-ground vegetation is part of the setting; treat the reserve as mountain habitat as well as a walking destination. The central Lawers group contains broader slopes as well as more defined neighbouring ridges. Beinn Ghlas helps reveal that variety, with Meall Corranaich occupying another part of the surrounding high ground and Ben Lawers providing the more prominent summit beyond.
