Ben Macdui occupies the centre of the high Cairngorm plateau and is Britain’s second-highest mountain. Its appeal is the scale of the upper landscape, approached from either Speyside or Deeside, rather than a narrow summit pinnacle. The northern plateau and the southern glens reveal different sides of the same large mountain. Its highest point is less visually isolated than its national ranking might suggest, so the surrounding high country becomes the main experience. The familiar Old Grey Man story belongs to folklore; the physical scale of this landscape provides its own distinctive character.

Northern and southern approaches reveal different surrounding landscapes, while the highest point sits within a much larger area of exposed high ground.
Northern and southern approaches create very different journeys. Choose the full itinerary before estimating time or effort. A northern plateau outing and a southern glen approach should retain their own statistics. A Speyside plateau route and a Deeside glen approach should retain separate distances and returns. The absence of a narrow technical crest does not remove the importance of navigation, especially when cloud conceals the broad upper landforms.
Expansive high ground gives the summit an exposed, open setting. The Old Grey Man belongs to mountain folklore, not a factual hazard assessment. The physical landscape supplies ample reason to visit without treating legend as evidence. The high Cairngorm interior extends around the summit, with major glens and neighbouring mountains defining the wider massif. That large-scale setting explains why the approach direction changes the character of the day far more than a summit label alone can indicate.
